(Notes of 03/11/2008) Tasted by 1/3 pint at the John Russell Fox, a JDW pub in Andover, during the chain's beer festival; served by a non-sparkler pour. According to the festival programme, in total there are 7 varieties of hops used in this wheat ale: Cascade, Cluster, First Gold, Pacific Gem, Saaz, Styrian Goldings and Willamette.

A: dark straw in colour with a soapy head, clear and faintly carbonated.
S: absolutely weird is the aroma... a strong odour almost like an expired and oxidised banana oil assumes an overwhelming influence on the nose, littered with random nectar, some citrus fruits... but only just bearable and NOT pleasant. I suspect the cask is infected, if the beer is not supposed to smell this odd?
T: the palate is littered with random touches of citric hops, wheat malts, very restrained banana-esters; turning increasingly bitter and sour-ish on the malty side, while it's consistently messy in terms of the hop profile - I can sense no complementary effect but lots of mutually cancelling-out factors. The overall flavour is only salvaged by a bitter and lengthy hoppiness in the end.
M&D: the palate is quiet, semi-fresh, clean, light-thin bodied, but the flavour profile is really in a mess and the already weak body of wheat-malts is not helped at all by the weird composition of hops. I wonder why the brewery decides to use so many varieties of hops in a wheat beer (which traditionally and by definition should feature the clean and light wheat-ish flavour, no?), if the only effect is to let them cancel each other out? This is an unsuccessful attempt at a hop feast.

500 ml bottle, bought at ICA Middelthon, Stavanger (also available at Vaaland, Bryne). ABV is 4.4%. Crystal clear pale golden colour (like a pilsener), big to moderate white head. The aroma is hoppy with grassy and citric notes. Refreshing hoppy flavour, ending in a grapefruity and slightly resinous bitterness, there is some malty sweetness but it is quite subdued. I thought the cask version had more of a wheaty character than the bottle. Well, the bottles are pasteurised, so that probably explains it. More of a "well hopped pilsener" character here. Not bad though.

June 2007: Cask conditioned at The Golden Lion, York. Served at correct temperature. Golden colour. Creamy head, nice lacing. Moderate wheaty and citrussy aroma. Pleasant wheaty and lemony / grapefruity flavour, soft mouthfeel, refreshing.

500ml bottle bought from The Vintage, Antrim...

Poured light golden yellow colour. White head poured big and foamy with a meringue like top then faded to light patchy covering with thick edging... Barely any carbonation bubbles... some decent lines of lacing...

Aroma - Grainy wheatiness, chalky notes, lots of floral and grassy notes, cookie dough, light citrus fruits (sour apples, lemons, water melons), some dishwater traces, light pepperiness...

Taste - Thin and watery - very soda water like... faint biscuit notes, tart fruits (sour apples, lemons, light grapefruits), faint chalkiness, some floral notes, salty... all in all a bit on the bland side...

Feel - Sharp, dry and spritzy... light bodied... pretty refeshing but way too bland to have me going back for more... quite gassy too...

Overall - A very bland brew and quite un-beer like... would make a good mixer. Give me a Belgian or German wheat beer any day !!
