one of the more unique beers we enjoyed in an evening of extremely unique beers, so thats cool. thanks to claystation for this one, never would have known this existed. aged in 50 year cognac barrels here is a true old ale, classic english malty strong ale, with brett. the pour isnt all that appealing, murky light copper, barley a tuft of foam, and an apparent stillness. the nose rocks though, tons of cognac, boozy more from the barrel i think than from the beer itself, which is uncommon, and there seems to be a real sourness to the nose. its bretty sure, but its also juicy and tangy and acidic smelling, not what i expected in an old ale at all. that sourness in the smell never really comes into play in the flavor, just a bretty funk to the finish, but the delicate yeast side of this is lost almost entirely to the cognac, which dominates the flavor of this beer. its mature and woody, strong and sweet, and a really cool compliment to the base beer. i could not really think of a better choice of a beer to go into such barrels, heavy malty high gravity brew, bready and sweet, toffee and butterscotch, rum spice almost in here too, very very complex, very unconventional. have not had much beer from yazoo, i know they do some weird stuff with yeast. this is excellent beer on the whole, definitely an adventure for the palate. dont know where its for sale, but if you see it, pick it up for sure.
