The flagship dark Lager of the Christmas season, this strong, rich dark brown brew has low hop bitterness and a subtle roasted malt flavor. Its higher alcohol content makes it smooth and warming going down. Pairs beautifully with the Holiday Spirit!

Deep ruby-chestnut hue with a nice full, foamy light tan head that fades slowly and leaves some decent, though somewhat thin, rings of lace on the glass.

Aroma is somewhat bland, with just mild notes of sweet malt.

Very thin and light in body and mouthfeel for the style, with a flavor that is just as stylistically lacking: nothing but light caramel malt up front, with some slight chocolate notes showing up a little later, and an oddly tangy flavor toward the back--perhaps from the hops?--that rolls into a bit of a chocolaty-sweet finish.

Somewhat drinkable in nature, but a far cry from a true Doppelbock. The brewpub's website labels this lager with an 8.5% ABV; perhaps this batch represents a change in recipe or a rush to get the beer out, but a 5.9% ABV is nowhere near normal attenuation for a Doppelbock, nor is this particular example a decent representation of the style.
