A - Poured a somewhat cloudy, star yellow color with a fizzy, bubbly, white, one-finger head. It left no lace.

S - It smelled of lemon zest, citrus and wheat.

T - It had a strong sweet wheat flavor, with a slight citrus kick. It had a subtle clove and yeast taste.

M - It was fairly crisp and sharp. A light bodied beer.

D - Not a bad American wheat beer. Usually better on tap than from a bottle.

Pours a three finger, white head that fades to a ring leaving no lace. Almost cloudy light amber color. Light carbonation and light bodied. Light citrus nose. Starts as weak lemony/hoppy flavor no wheat or yeast, clean finish. $1.39 for a 12oz bottle from John's Grocery Iowa City, IA.

7/21/2005 $6.99 6 pack 5.22% No best by date.

Appearance:

Pours your typical cloudy straw for an unfiltered wheat topped with little to no head.

Aroma:

Fresh citrus notes with some subtle banana notes.

Taste/Mouthfeel:

Not as crisp and refreshing as I like from my wheat beers, with some dryness throughout. Banana characteristics are highlighted towards the end with a bit of malt sweetness. 16 IBU's according to the brewery, but it feels like more. Too dry from start to finish.

Pony Express Original Wheat pours a deep gold with a medium short-lived head with slight lacing. It's aroma is almost nonexistent, with (maybe) a faint smell of corn (?). The flavor is light. Actually, there is a pleasant balance of wheat, barley and corn, with a fairly dry finish. I think this is what the 'big 3' *wish* they could accomplish as the All American Beer. Carbonation is decent with nary an aftertaste. In summary, this is an excellent summer beer which is somewhat reminiscent of Sam Adams Summer Gold, way back when.

12 Ounce bottle brought by a friend from Kansas City.

Opened the bottle and noted sediment in the neck despit sitting upright in fridge for some time.

Poured into shaker pint cloudy sunshine yellow with a short-lived one-finger, white head. Little traces of lace.

Aroma was faint floral hops and some backgroung grassy wheat smell. Really pretty featureless.

Taste was bland with few distinct flavors. Some lemony hop and fruity yeast with a mild wheat malt backdrop.

No aftertaste and thin bodied.

Glad I was able to review it. But, I will stick to the local wheats.

this beer poured with no head. no lacing of glass either. smell very mild citrus. heavy mouthfeel a little slick. finishes quite bitter for a wheat beer. taste grain and a neutral sweetness that doesn't really taste like malt. this beer is not bad but it definitely not an interesting craft brew worthy of a higher than average price.

I love the bottle style..very American, blue w/ white stars. Pours a pale yellow color with a ton of yeast.. Head is short-lived, but the lacing isn't bad for a wheat ale. More fragrant than their Rattlesnake pale ale, that's for sure. Subtle malty aroma, which is actually somewhat complex. Taste is better too..more smooth and malty..reminded me of a hefeweizen actually. I was impressed with the mouthfee and it turned out to be a very drinkable and worthwhile wheat beer to try. Holds it's own with Boulevard Wheat...Gumballhead destroys them both.

Light bodied, hazy orange amber color like unfiltered cider with a modest and short lived ivory head.

The aroma is mild, slightly fruity, yeasty, straw scent.

The taste is slightly spicy wheaties with a touch of apples or bananas. Somewhat more robust and malty than typical wheat ales.

Still refreshing and drinkable. It actually went very well with some buffalo wings and pizza.

My first beer from this company. Cool blue and white star covered cap. It pours a light and cloudy golden color with a small head that doesn't stick around too long, but leaves a little lacing on the glass. The aroma has a small wheat presence along with some hints of fruit. Pleasant. The flavor is a lot more malty than I expected for a wheat beer, but it's well blended. Slight hop presence and a clean finish. Not what I want from a wheat beer, but it's still very enjoyable and I'd have it again.

Pale Wheat Ale? Okay, I'll try it.

Pretty nice pour. Hazy gold with a small and fragrant head.

Smell is big on fruit. Apples and tomatoey yeast. Wheat spice is in there, but it smells almost candy-coated, along with a pilsner grain odor. Odd and nice.

The fruit comes out in the flavor, but in a strange way. It seriously tastes like yeast up front, but that gives way quickly to a bitter bite and slightly sour aftertaste. This tastes kind of like the air in an old barn, during the summer. You ever sat on a heystack? It's like that.

Very nice, very creamy, full body helps this go down smooth. Certainly one of the stranger wheat beers I've ever had.

Nice golden color with a bone white head. Lots of streaming bubbles. Wheat malt aromas are most dominant. Very mild hop tones. Slight sweet citrus aromas also present. Lots of sweet wheat malt throughout. Mild banana esters noticable. Fairly long, wheaty finish. Overall, a very drinkable beer. As a somewhat non-fan of wheat beers, this is a good example. Worth a try.

The beer after its pour from the 12-ounce brown bottle sets in the glass a somewhat chill hazed golden amber color with the head modest in size and a winsome semi-creamy white color, after its disintegration the lace forms a thin white veil upon the glass. Nose has a nice sweet wheat aroma with a fresh crispness and the start sweet with a nice grain profile, the top is light in its feel to the palate. Finish is moderately acidic and the hops pleasant and subdued quite dry and long lasting aftertaste, a decent drinking beer

Milky orange-gold, as opaque as any stout and more than some. The cap is aged parchment in color and is on the small side, even after an aggressive pour. The head isn't dense, creamy or sticky in the least and deposits no more than a short, ragged collar of lace.

The aroma is stronger than that of most wheats in my experience. It smells like there might be a generous percentage of barley malt to go along with the wheat malt, along with a great deal of yeast. Fruity is a word that comes to mind.

The flavor is tangily wheat malty, though not in an unpleasant sense. It's teasingly, pleasingly sour. It's a slightly different flavor profile for an American Pale Wheat and it works pretty well. The mild fruitiness that I appreciated in the nose is still present and is a flavor that is probably yeast-related. Although the body is on the light side, it isn't a bit out of line for the style.

Pony Express Original Wheat is definitely original; it isn't like any wheat beer that I've ever had. While it isn't a knockout, it is a friendly, thirst-quenching summer brew. It's also superior to Boulevard's version for those of you who are keeping score on the local level. Thanks to brewQ for the bottle.

Poured pale yellow with a small head that stuck around, decent carbonation. Smelled a bit of a doughy scent, tiny bit of malty smell, too. Tastes plenty of wheat, with a citrus tone to it. Crisp feel to it with a bit of a bite. Far from my favorite beer, but a good wheat, and a good local showing.

The Kansas City wheat beer battle is on, apparently!

Lesser known Pony Express is getting some taps to challenge Boulevard's wheat. The Pony folks had a sign, in the Pub men's room, urging drinkers to try their offering. So, I did.

The tap looked good- slight haze in deep yellow brew.
Not much on the aroma side to note.
Taste was slightly citric, refreshing.
A good finish with some wheat character coming on.
Quite easily drinkable.

Though I'm not a wheat expert, these guys could provide Boulevard with some competiton this summer.

Minimal white head. Hazed golden brew. Plenty of yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle.
Aroma of grainy, doughy malt. Wheat and a hint of yeast.

Taste shows a grainy malt and wheat backbone. Fairly tart and crisp. Bit of yeast and just a hint of lemon. Decent balance and a nice finish. Pretty clean.

Good mouthfeel and solid drinkability.

Overall, a solid wheat beer. A nice find by a family member on a business trip in Kansas City.
