This is in the category of fermented in Jack Daniels whiskey barrels, and I am not qualified to comment on that aspect of it. It was jet black, but did not taste too terribly burnt to me, in fact, for a black IPA served in a 10 oz snifter instead of a pint, it was not particularly heavy or overwhelming. Very drinkable in fact.
