Standard brown half liter bottle with a red, brown and white label in the same design as the others in the Rifey line - "Rifey" in big letters, coat of arms above, slogan "brewed with special materials" above that. This is the "extra strong," but the ABV puts it right in the middle of standard Russian strong beers. Unlike most Russian strongs, there's no sugar here. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 7/2/04, I opened it on 2/29/04 - Happy Leap Day!
Nice looking clear medium gold hue with a good bit of bubble action feeding a 1.5 finger white head that settles to film fairly quickly but leaves a bit of lace. The nose is quite subdued, avoiding the sickly sweet of most Russian strongs. There just a bit of malt here, and a touch of flowery hops. The mouth is medium-bodied and not overly carbonated. The taste is smooth. There's alcohol here, but it is masked nicely by some barley and a good bit of hoppy bitterness. The hops are a bit on the metallic side, but not to the point of chewing on nails like many of the competitors produce. This is a good, smooth Russian strong definitely worth looking for.
