12oz bottle purchased from the brewpub (it's not available anywhere else) that reads "Barley Wine Style Ale" in large type. A small white sticker with lettering printed from a computer has been affixed at the bottom of the label that informs the beholder that it is a Peat Smoked Barley Wine and that it was brewed on December 12, 2004. Upper neck and cap wrapped in gold foil.

Poured a cloudy orange-bronze color, with a one-inch off white head that dropped in about two minutes. Lots of spotty lace.

The aroma is mostly about peat. That said, it's not as peaty smelling as a lot of Scotch ales, to say nothing of a tumbler of good single malt. It's more of a sweet peatiness, which I don't think works satisfactorily. There's a mildly citrusy bitter hoppiness, but it doesn't have much of a chance against the peat.

The taste is similar to the nose, although the mildly bitter hops do come out to play a little less hesitantly. The oddly sweet peatiness coats the taste buds first, and then is followed by the hops, which seem oddly separate, though still subordinate. It could be that this needs more time for the flavors to meld, but I think it's more a case of the two elements not really being meant to go together. There's also an odd flavor that I can only describe as being reminiscent of the odor of a fresh band-aid. Thankfully, it's pretty minor.

The mouthfeel is about normal for a barley wine. Nothing surprising or noteworthy here.

While this is drinkable, it's not terribly good tasting. I won't feel obligated to buy another one of these next time I'm in Kennewick. I'm not sure if this hasn't aged well, hasn't aged enough, or just wasn't that good an idea to begin with.
