After two years the alleged 120 IBUs of bittering power havent all survived in Ice Harbors barleywine. This is for the best, as I cant imagine wanting to drink a fresh batch of beer brewed to 120 IBU. But the identity of this brawny orange ale is still intact. Its a mammoth IPA though its not clear what exactly a triple IPA is or alleges to be.
This beer reminds me of Double Bastard with its tremendous piney aroma and taste. A few phenols cut in, but not aggressively so. Alcohol flavor is all but absent, carbonation is medium-low. A fair measure of retained sugars contributes to a huge malty body holding a storm of tiny suspended flocs. I noted a slight film of yeast residue at the bottom of the twist-top bottle, but nothing otherwise suggested bottle conditioning. It was also probably refrigerated for most of its lifetime, putting any active yeasts into a state of prolonged dormancy. All of this suggests to me that another two years in a genuine cellar might add further polish. If possible, a few months of cask time might put some real silk on it.
This is a fine ale for the present moment so I wouldnt hesitate to score some for now or to stockpile as a cellaring candidate in the years ahead. The brewery sells bottles to go for $3.50 apiece.

12oz foil wrapped bottle purchased at IHs brewpub in Kennewick about six or seven months ago for about $3-4.
Poured an orange-amber color, with lots of sediment visible floating around in my glass. Moderate sized off-white head that dropped after about three minutes. A ring of foam endured for some time.
Smell of citrusy hops and booze. The booze is more dominant than the hops.
The taste is a little better balanced than the smell, but its still kind of brash. Theres a boozy maltiness at the start. Midway through the taste the hops grassy, dry and citrusy take over. The ending is very dry. Theres an odd, earthy flavor in the background throughout.
Not an unpleasant beer, though I think a little more R&D needs to be done. Its very possible this will be a better beer in a year or two, once things have done a lot more melding, though its had 14 months already. Drinkability? As a sipper after an extremely nasty day of working two full-time jobs, its doing its thing. Does it make a session beer? Hey, what part of 10.3% dont you understand?
