Clear amber-red colour with a small, creamy tan head. Fair head retention.
Slightly spicy aroma with a hint of toffee. Balanced but not all that complex.
Nice spicy esters play against caramelised malts and a hint of fruit. The clove note works particularly well.
Medium-full body with moderately-low carbonation. Good.
A very good beer with excellent yeast character and an appropriate malt profile.

On tap at Thirsty Bear on 7/15/09.
A - Mahogany/burgundy-colored body with a copper tinge and creamy beige head that settled into a thin ring of retention and some patchy film, but left behind thick, ornate lacing around the glass.
S - Toasted and cereal grains dominate the aroma, while barnyard notes of subtle funk and hay are secondary. Some burnt caramel malt is also present. Very bready overall. Subtle hints of alcohol also emerge. Hops are buried in the backround, but possess a light earthy quality.
T - Opens with a subtlly complex blend of barnyard funk featuring hints of hay and fresh grass as well as spicy yeast. Lots of cereal grains in the mix. A prominent toasted grainy character really swoops in during the backend accompanied by an earthy, herbal hop bite in the finish.
M - Medium bodied with a watery texture, though there is a slight syrupy mouthfeel. Carbonation is fairly tame overall. Finishes with mild hop bitterness on the palate.
D - I was pleasantly surprised with this seasonal offering from Thirsty Bear, which was coincidentally my first impression of this brewery. I found this to be a subtly complex Belgian Farmhouse-style ale with lots going on without relying heavily on one specific aspect of the brew. One of my stand-outs from the trip to California!
