I sampled this brew on a recent visit to the pub in Branford. They advertise at 13.5% abv, it is either remarkably well hidden , or overstated.
The beer comes chilled in a snifter, in a clear chestnut hue with a thin fizzy edge layer of beige colored head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, some dark fruit and hints of vanilla. Overall generally sweet.
First sip reveals an average body with very fine tingly carbonation and a slightly sticky texture.
Flavor is sweet up front with dark fruit and brown sugar mixing with a bit of caramel too. The sweetness rolls to a bitter finish that is of the herbal and tea leaf variety. Maybe booze causes this bite. The beer is pretty tasty and causes herbal burps as I move along with the tasting. A fine beer from SBC, I almost bought a growler, but needed to watch the $ for the day.

This is the 2012 batch bottled in 2013 and consumed in March 2014. Pretty straightforward American barleywine with solid flavor but not a ton of complexity. Took this home in a refillable pint sized growler that was filled short of the cap. I was pleased there was some degree of carbonation remaining but it was a little low; an aggressive pour failed to produce much in the way of a head or lacing.

Aroma was pretty typical, some dark fruits, earthy hops, a whiff of booze; the flavor was hoppier than anticipated without being too bitter on the finish; quite fruity and malty with some nice caramel notes, booze pretty well hidden. Still pretty perfunctory. Body just over medium, low smooth carbonation, light stickiness.

Solid barleywine. I paid about 12 bucks for the pint, a little steep for what it was but definitely delivered in terms of impact even if it wasn't tasted.
