On-draught @ Speights brewery taproom, Dunedin, New Zealand. $10.50 NZD per pint.
The tap handle calls it an "amber ale," but their website (https://www.thealehouse.co.nz/view-the-range/) calls it both a "Traditional Dark Ale" and a "dark lager style beer." Hmm.
4.0% ABV.
Malt backbone leans heavy on English malts with notes of caramel and toffee. A hint of malted milk balls.
Hopwise, I don't think it's very overt, showing very little character from the Green Bullet and Pacific Jade hops.
In short, it's a bit insipid, basically harping on one note of caramel and little else.
Smooth, medium-bodied.
Probably an ale despite the absence of any overt ale yeast esters. Drinkable, but not a terribly good brew.
