Mahou S.A. “Mahou Barrica - Bourbon”
33 cl brown glass bottle coded “Consumir preferemente antes del: 18-03-25 L4632611451”. Sampled on 30-11-23.
€1,99 @ Carrefour, San Pablo, Sevilla, ES
Notes via stream of consciousness: I was quite impressed with the quality and low cost of the Mahou Barrica Original so when I saw this version I didn’t hesitate. It’s poured a mostly clear deep amber colored body beneath a thumb’s width of white foam. It seems a little bit darker than the other one, and this is stronger at 6.9% ABV.The Bourbon and oak are both clear in the aroma along with a note of vanilla, some sweet and grainy malt, oak, and a smear of hops. It’s grainy, cereal like, a little toasty, lightly caramelish, honeyish, and fruity with dried apple and raisins. I can’t make out the hops through the oak and other barrel characteristics but there’s definitely some grassiness and floral notes going on. I’m getting a pleasant vanilla and coconut note along with the oaky dryness. I get some alcohol as well. It’s moderately bitter but it finishes with some oak and alcohol dryness, a little bit of spiciness that’s probably from the alcohol, a light touch of fruitiness, and occasionally with some vanilla & coconut appearing. In the mouth it’s medium bodied but dextrinous, almost heading to becoming full bodied, and smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. The head held up well and it’s left some very impressive thin lace that covers the entire glass. It’s not the best Bourbon barrel aged beer that I’ve ever had but for the price I’d buy it by the case if I could.

De color ámbar, con una espuma jabonosa de retención media. Ligera y de carbonatación media. Aroma a malta, caramelo y vainilla. Sabor dulce gracias a la sensación de malta, toffee y vainilla.

i cannot read the spanish on the label well, but i assume this is a bourbon barrel aged lager. its a cool idea for a beer, something we dont see a whole lot of, and its not overly barrel forward, but its really tasty, albeit a bit sweet, i like the vanilla and corn elements that come from it, more whiskey than wood, which is probably fine in such a basic and simple base beer. blonde to brassy in color with a short white head and some fizziness from the bottle. smells like confectioners sugar and oak, honey, and pale barley. i dont get all that much of a lager from this, like the sweetness from the barrel overrides it a bit, and there really isnt the lager yeast flavor or crispness. still, its a simple pale beer that drinks easy and has some nice barrel character without being crazy strong or anything. something a little different, drinkable enough, bubbly, kind of hearty for what it is, and far better than the only other beer i have ever had from these guys. i think there is plenty of room for more barrel aged lager types out there...

Golden colour, medium head with long retention, good lace.
Aroma, well, there's some wood, but minimal. Notes of coconut and vanilla.
Medium body,slick feel, good carbonation.
Taste, again minimal wood, vanilla, coconut. Just another industrial trying to attract public of the traditional ad artisannal beers.

From Eroski. In Mahou Barrica glass. At dinner, with stars soup + sausages. Much better than expected. Good feel, abv well hidden. The bourbon touch is soft but noticeable giving it some actual flavor to a Mahou brew
