Sample on tap at What’s Brewing Beer Festival, Stavanger. Black colour, tan head. Roasty aroma, notes of chocolate, coffee and prunes, a hint of fresh plums too. Roasty flavour, coffee, dark bitter chocolate, bittering hops. Bitter aftertaste.

16.9 ounce bottle.

Appearance: Black body with dark brown edges capped with a beige head. Fine lacing from the semi-durable head.

Smell: Dark roasted malts with hints of yeast, black licorice, and graham crackers.

Taste: Strong flavored of dark and burnt malts yielding too much char but only faint smoke. Quite hoppy for an English stout.

Mouthfeel: Full body. Soft, medium carbonation. Moderate heat from the alcohol.

Overall: a cross between an export stout and a Black IPA.

16.9 ounce bottle - $5.49 at Lucky's Beverage World in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Basic black body capped with a frothed, thinning, beige head. A little, lightly frothy lacework.

Smell: Burnt, tar-like roasted black malts, hints of weed stems, some yeast, black licorice, and dark fruity esters.

Taste: Black malts yielding an upfront creosote, chary taste and then it's all downhill from there -- burnt chocolate, lacquery licorice, dark fruit. Grimace-yielding, burnt finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Absolutely dreadful!

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear dark cola brown in color with light amounts of active visible carbonation and some ruby red highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall sudsy foamy tan head that reduces to a large patch of very thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted and chocolate malts with a moderate presence of licorice/anise.

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of roasted and chocolate malts with a slightly heavier than moderate amount of licorice/anise. Underneath the malts there is a very light amount of earthy hops which imparts some light bitterness towards the finish. Light hints of alcohol towards the finish.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: A little too intense in the alcohol for me, I wish that it had been hidden a little better. A really strong presence of anise/licorice which has to be something you really enjoy to like this brew.

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar—closer inspection reveals traces of dark brown are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down but never completely faded away.
S: Moderate aromas of licorice are present in the nose along with notes of dark chocolate.
T: The taste is dominated by flavors of black licorice and also has some notes of dark chocolate and a light amount of bitterness. Hints of alcohol are perceptible in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. Slight hints of warming are perceptible from the alcohol.
O: This beer tastes like an Imperial English Porter, if there was such a style. It's not as heavy in body as an imperial stout, but you can definitely get some hints of the alcohol in the taste.
