This is classic dry stout made from chocolate malt and roasted barley with a few oats for creaminess. The result is a “coffee-like” flavor and aroma.

A number of Columbia Basin beers make reference to some aspect of the nearby Hanford Nuclear Reservation, site of the world’s first sustained nuclear reactor and makers of plutonium for the first atomic bombs. That would seem to be the case here, unless of course this professed dry stout is actually brewed with heavy water in which case I suppose I must now be fortified against radioactive exposure. Cool.

D2O has a strong roasted barley aroma with coffee overtones. Roasted elements define the core flavors with a good coffee vapor aftertaste. It’s not as dry as dry stouts usually are, probably from overuse of roasted barley and the uncharacteristic 63 IBU. Whitstran also adds oats to the grain bill though they leave no lace and fail to stir up much of a head. Still, a very hearty ale. Heavy water indeed.

I was served a 4 ounce sample at the brewery while on a beer run to Yakima from Richland. Whitstran is located between Richland and Yakima so my buddies and I stopped of to sample the current line-up.

A:It poured a deep dark brown/black with a nice creamy caramel head that supported a curtain of lacing deep into the experience.

S: It had the aroma of dark bitter chocolate with a floral hoppy kick.

T: The dark roasted barleys and malts produced a nice chocolate flavor and the robust hop presence created slightly bitter bite. I expected more coffee flavors but I did not detect that profile.

M: Medium body with a nice creamy richness, a bitter sweet chocolate front with a bitter end and slightly sour aftertaste.

D: It was a smooth but not completely satisfying stout. I expected a more pronounced coffee profile and the body was a bit thinner than I anticipated. That said, it deserves a try.
