Nice malty nose with some dark crystal and brown sugar in there too. No hop aroma which is appropriate for the style. But I don't get much yeast or fermentation character either.
Dark amber colored with a tan head that settles into a quarter inch layer. Very clear
Flavor starts off malty and fruity but the hop bitterness is pretty high. Kind of off for the style. As it warmed up I get some english treacle and deep crystal malt flavors.
Medium bodied with a pretty good creamy carbonation level.
Well it's a decent beer and drikable, sure. But also not really memorable. Nothing about it stands out nor is it a superior example of the style.

Scottish ales are brewed with low measures of hops and often create rich tapestries of malt flavor. Whitstrans model heartily achieves this with a complex aroma scored with notes of melon, raspberry, and lychee. The aroma slips into the taste platform that is punctuated by low bittering with a slight cola aftertaste.
This was the only Whitstran beer I evaluated in bottle form after leaving the brewery with a bagful of bottled goodies. If all their beers hold as well as this one, Id say their bottled product is secure. The bottle was a twist-off with a one-color label and no lees. Carbonation was modest.
Highlander has a plush scarlet color with fine clarity though not a hint of head or lace. Perhaps it was the lack of suds or perhaps Im just spoiled from drinking so much draught beer, but this bottled ale didnt convey the same standard of full-bodiedness that Im accustomed to. It was sullen but proud. Still, I wouldnt mind having another, and in fact, I did.

I was poured a four ounce sample from the tap at the brewery tasting room in Prosser, WA.
A: It poured a bight light amber with a sticky robust tan.
S: The aroma of tasty sweet roasted malts dominated. There was an undercurrent of herbal hops but they were reserved and required substantial agitation to come to the front.
T: The sweet malts were apparent early in the sip but quickly a bitterness emerged. The brew exhibited a sour distinctly unpleasant flavor that diminished the enjoyment of the drink.
M: It had a light thin body with a reasonably dry finish and a persistent sour aftertaste.
D: I expected a bit more body, higher ABV, and sweeter malt flavor. This brew is not difficult to consume but it will not be the first pick off the bench.
