In conjunction with the Skatalites' 50th anniversary tour Ska will be releasing Hi-Hop Rye Pale Ale commemorating the band’s legacy and influence on ska and reggae music. "We wanted to brew a beer that incorporates The Skatalites' Jamaican roots while capturing the essence of early fall in the Rockies" says Bill Graham, Ska Co-Founder and Brewery Overlord, "It is a balanced beer that compliments the climatic diversity of the season; something refreshing for the warm days but hearty enough for the cool nights. [It retains] tropical hop notes but also a mildly warming rye spice. Campfire beach beer if you will" Hi-Hop Rye will be available in 22oz bottles and features a green label with the Skatalites' iconic rocket ship symbol in the foreground.

Bottle label info: "Lester toots the sax in '64 and in '95 the good vibrations arrive in Durango. To your 50th and our 19th."
The body appears crystal clear with a deep copper hue; the head is thick and sticky. The aroma exudes a bold combination of caramel sweetness and spicy rye character; toffee and peanut brittle; very subtle piney hop scent. The flavor mimics the aroma with additional presence of hop bitterness easing into the finish; buttery. Medium-heavy body with a low-key tingly carbonation makes up the bulk of the mouthfeel.
An interesting IPA that has more of a spicy rye and sweet sorghum tinge, leaning heavily on the malt grain sweetness and leaving the hop bitterness way in the background. This brew makes for a nice late Fall / early Winter sipper...

i love seeing new beers from ska, and this one is right in their wheelhouse, hoppy! its got some caramel color to it from the rye malt, and is nice and heady in my glass. the nose on it is impressively rye forward, not spicy but zesty and big. the hops are as intense as they are in other ska beers, fresh and bitter and piney. its a nice compliment to the rye, i think they are in great balance here. the finish is pretty dry for the grain weight to this, and the beer has a lot of life to its feel, bubbly and clean. ive been getting more and more into rye beers this fall, and this is one of my favorite new beers of the season so far. not overly distinct from other good ryes, but a cool new launch from ska.
