The name is Russian slang for a "he-man" or tough guy. Comes in a standard brown half liter bottle with a multi-colored label featuring a very muscular tough guy holding a wooden mug in one hand and giving the thumbs-up sign with the other. The ingredients include what my dictionary tells me is "liquer of hawthorn." Interesting. Unpasteurized, the beer is best before 3/24/04, I opened it on 3/21/04. The back label refers to the "American Golden Certificate of Quality" and includes the saying: "Not in vain women say that a man is a man, even in Africa." Yikes!
Pours a clear and deep orange gold under a very thin 1/2 finger ivory head that fades very quickly to film. The nose is sweet and fruity, wiht a hint of sourmash. The mouth is fairly heavy, with medium carbonation. There is a slight hint of sourmash amongst the malt in the opening taste. There is also a tart fruitiness, presumably from the hawthorn. This tanginess mixes well with a fairly substantial hop presence. The finish is bitter and tart, while the aftertaste is sweet. Quite a pleasant brew, believe it or not.
