Like other Trask beers, McCabe Scottish is noted for its clear, mild-mannered body, judiciously restrained hop aromatics, and customary old-world styling. In this instance however, the result is a sullen brew of peculiar design in sharp contrast to their more inspired session ales.
McCabe Scottish projects a strong yeasty odor. In direct light itÂ’s a warm Bing cherry color; in ambient light it is chestnut. A modest head, absent lace, and an oafish, distorted flavor lead me to question both the freshness of the tap and the intent of the recipe. The astringent finish is also distinctly unsatisfying.
It would be generous to assume that my pint was served from a stale tap. This might explain the flatness in the body and the lack of endurance in the flavor. Still, I suspect that even a fresh pour might express a strange alignment of flavor profiles.
