Landwehr-Bräu is a large, very well run hotel, restaurant, and brewery. The decor is much fancier than any place that I've visited in Germany, and I've covered most of the country. The outside of the brewery is spectacular to look at, the rooms are nice (and surprisingly inexpensive), and the restaurant is gorgeous. There's green marble tile in some rooms, and wood floors in others. There are carpet runners in the marbles floor areas. Stone pillars support the main ceiling beams. There are oil paintings, carved wood statues, hunting horns, bakeware, and steins lining the walls. There are booths for seating, as well as free-standing tables and chairs with carved wood backs and bright crimson cloth seat cushions in one room, and a green and white checked banquet wrapping around cherry wood tables and chairs in another. There are at least 7 areas in all, each with their own decor. It's traditional Germany decor, but it's really amped up.

The food is excellent, as you might expect. You might also expect that it's a bit pricey, and in comparison to quite a few brauerei & gaststätte that I visited it is, but at the same time it's no more expensive than dining in the U.S. Some examples of what they offer include a salad with bacon & croutons for 6,10€, cream of pumpkin soup for 5,20€, beer-battered carp with potato salad for 17,80€, beef and pork medallions on dark beer sauce
with fried bacon, grilled tomatoes and roasted potatoes for 19,20€, and roast beef with spaetzle for 23,90€.

They brew ten beers throughout the year but not all of them are available at all times. You've got helles, edel, two varieties of Pils, dunkel, red, kellerbier and alcohol free. That's still a big line-up in Germany, and there are also radlers as well and perhaps one of the seasonals.

There's not a lot on the romantic road as far as beer goes, so I'd suggest you give it a shot.

Nicely appointed building and grounds. Very well maintained and prosperous. Food was decent, although not outstanding. Honestly, it seemed too upscale for a brewery-guesthouse. Their beer is ok, the food is decent, but there are others I like better.

I visited this brewery in December of 2011 with some friends of mine who live in and around Rothenburg o.d.T. The brewery tour was pretty much like any other tour. Because I was the only American in the group we took the tour in German, so I didn't understand every word (I caught most of it). The let us try sips of the beer at each step of the process which was unique.

After the tour you go into a small tasting area where you can try a few of their bottled beers. They did not have anything on draft. You can buy different packages, and depending on what you buy dictates the food you get and the number of beers. One of my friends I was with was friends with one of the workers at the brewery, so we got the VIP treatment with 3 large plates of meats, cheeses, and breads that kept our group of 8 satisfied. We were there for about two hours relaxing trying the beers and enjoying the spread.

Overall I had a great time. I definitely got more out of it because I was with native Germans. I would recommend checking it out if you find yourself in Rothenburg.
