On my first and only visit to Pacific Rim, they were down to just one regular house beer and this big seasonal barleywine they claimed was 14% ABV. I was somewhat skeptical about the alcohol claim, but I stepped up and ordered a pint anyway. I did so despite the advance warning that pints of this big ale are served for a jaw-dropping $9.
Thankfully, Castaway was an ale worth drinking, unlike my first Pac Rim beer which was agonizingly bad. Castaway delivers an explosive array of fruity aroma. Melanoidins abound in the smell and taste with suggestions of every sort of dried fruit and the sweetness of pure brown sugar. Everything about the beer was regal except for the unexpectedly dilute body, which was distracting in its deficiency. The walnut colored body delivered good suds and made no convincing suggestion of its alleged alcohol content.
A very nice beer, but I can't endorse the distorted price tag.
