Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a hazy medium to dark orange-brown amber with a thin light khaki head with good retention and lots of lacing. Foamed a little bit on opening, but poured and developed a head nicely. Aroma of caramel malt, light toffee, fresh and dried dark fruit, light bourbon; the aroma leaning towards an English style barleywine. Flavor follows, with nicely melded caramel malt, dark fruit and light toffee. Bourbon is present, but subsumed into the other flavors. Finishes with a bit of an alcohol burn, caramel malt and a nice light touch of hop bitterness; unlike the aroma, the flavor is traditional American barleywine. Medium bodied, a bit thinner than typical for a ba barleywine. Hits all the proper barleywine flavor points I want, but is a bit subdued. The barrel aging is noticeable, but not could have a bit more bourbon flavor. Nothing stands out, but a good, balanced barleywine that satisfied on a winter's evening. Hale's needs to put a vintage date on the bottle and an ABV. They are a good brewer and it's odd not to have this information on a ageable beer like this one.

Tried this during a visit to Seattle alongside many other barleywine and barrel-aged offerings. It was OK, but not my favorite. Thick body, sweet and fruity with a peaking bitterness in the middle. Could have had stronger barrel/bourbon notes in it for my taste. For a bourbon-aged barleywine, I prefered Laurelwood's Santa's Woody.

growler from growl movement in south salem, oregom. appearance is ok, minimal rim of foam, not much head at all, tho this style usually doesn't do much there anyway. color is nice, like a mix of copper/pear color. nose is a bit weak, and reminiscent of old fruit, i like my bw's a tad fresher and sweet in the nose. taste is heavy ripe fruits, like it should be, imho, tho this has a faint old quality that's throwing me off a bit. hides its abv pretty well, but half way into the glass and you can tell it's 10% is true. disappointed it's pretty much missing any hint of a barrel, which i look forward to in a bw since i think it helps cut the bw sweetness. decent effort, just age it more next time :)
