Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a medium orange brown. Small off-white head dissipates quickly leaving modest lacing. Spicy citrus hop aroma. Medium creamy mouth feel. Light malts, grapefruit with citrus hops. Hops dominate middle and finish with a bit of sweet malt body. Nicely balanced, enjoyable IPA.

ABV 8.3 and IBU 100. OMFG!! Okay, I've had a few of Hale's Ales and never been too impressed. They aren't bad, just sorta standard. But this DIPA is awesome. Not syrupy at all like so many DIPAs I've tried. Not overkill. Very balanced. Great aroma and balance of fruity-piney hops. It has a full spectrum of flavor, both front end and back end flavors burst forth. Very very very good. Will buy again. Pics of them making this awesome brew: http://www.seattlebeerweek.com/beer I ****ing love where I live! I know a lot of the country sees us as a bunch of tree huggers (many of us are... I am), but the culture here is unstoppable. And beers like this one here prove it. :D

Assertive resinous floral hops. citrus and grapefruit. toasted malts.
Floral resins, grapefruit, tangerine. Toasted biscuit and caramel. Moderate pine and resin bitterness.

This is a very good DIPA.
Cloudy, unfiltered appearance. Abundant foam settles nicely in the glass.
Pronounced citrus and pine hop flavors balanced with a nice sweetness.
A very pleasant and enjoyable DIPA worthy of the distinction celebrating Seattle Beer Week 2010.

22oz bomber that I picked up at Fred Meyer's on our trip to Spokane. Label as pictured above.
"Seattle Beer Week was created in honor of the rich and long standing beer community of this great state. We, The Seattle Beer Collective, use this week to raise a glass to you, the supporter of craft breweries. Prost!"
Poured slightly hazy, orange colored liquid with a thick, ivory foam. Head retention is very good and lots lace left on the glass. Looks good.
Smell a lot of hops, citrus, floral and spice, as expected from an DIPA. Tastehas more malt base than I was expecting, firm and biscuity. Hop flavors mirror the aroma, lots of citrus, high bitterness but not overly sharp or biting.
Medium body with good level of carbonation. Hoppiness coats your tongue, but the dry finish keeps you wanting more. Very drinkable. Higher alcohol (% not listed on label) well hidden, no burn at all. A well made, balanced example.

A- Brilliantly Clear light orangish Amber color, head disipates pretty quickily.
S- I can smell it from my seat, Citrus hops with a lot of grapefruit, orange and a bit of pine
T-Tastes like Pine too! A nice strius start though and a lot of carmel, the bitterness ligners well
M-A bit cloying more carbonation would be nice.
O A good beer, I think some carbonation would help with both the appearance and mouthfeel. Definitely the best Hale beer I have had.

22oz bottle.
Pours hazy, goldish copper with chunky particulates. An inch-plus head of dense white receded to a thin skim coat on the surface with smeary lacing throughout the glass.
Aromatics are nicely hoppy with honeyed malt. Pineapple, pine, grapefruit, and tangerine pith. Lightly dank with tropical overtones. Not screamingly pungent for the style.
Medium bodied with a slightly chewy, creamy mouthfeel. A bit lush.
Grapefruit, pine resin, and other tropicals ride atop plump malt on the palate. Sweetish but with a decent bitterness that attempts to dry out the beer. Slightly minerally with plenty of pithy fruit.
Finishes with plenty of sustaining bitterness, ripe malt, and pine-smashed fruit.
Tasty IIPA. Not anything excessive, and pretty balanced. Alcohol is very light and the brew is barely warming.
This ones going fast.

On tap at the Belmont Station. First time I'd seen this brewery's name, sounded special enough, and who can say no to a DIPA. HUGE juicy/citrus aromas, not in your face, but really enjoyable. Very smooth in texture, a little creamy. Between this and the Hopworks IPA I can easily say this might be some of the best use of hops I've tasted in a while. Very rich hop flavor, while not extremely bitter. This drinks like a very flavorful IPA rather than a DIPA. Very floral and earthy hop flavors come to mind. The texture helped with enjoying the hops. This is a very well balanced DIPA. The malt doesn't compete with the hops. very stoked on this beer.

I had 1/3 of a bottle during a poker game last night, brought by a friend who just returned from Seattle. The btter was light copper color, some chill haze and a thick wet-looking foam. The aroma was citrusy and west-coast-like, nice strong hops but tempered a little by a solid caramel malt base. Maybe too much caramel malt for my tastes, but at least the hops are stronger in the mix. The beer tastes abrasive but a little sweet, I could definitely have gone for taking the whole bomber. Very very nice DIPA qualities. The hops are more citrusy than floral, and the aftertaste is a little bitter but actually more flavorful. Overall just excellent.

Bottle courtesy of odiedog52. Served in a Surly pint glass.
A - Pours with two fingers of creamy yellow-tinged foam. Ridiculous retention, with the head lingering for minutes. The body is a hazy golden color with some suspended sediment. Splotchy lacing is left behind.
S - Soapy Cascade hops, sugar cookie, sweet citrus. There is some spicy and dank hop character in the periphery, as well as a bit of burnt sugar barleywine flavor.
T - Intense bitterness! Tons of grapefruit, but with a solid caramel backbone. Not super-complex, but does its one trick quite well.
M - Medium body that is sufficient for the ABV. Low carbonation, sticky texture, but not very dry or resinous. Thankfully not much heat either.
D - Sharing the bottle with Sean was no problem. I'd happily drink this again if it ever showed up on my radar. A solid, pleasant Imperial IPA.

22 oz bottle from West Richland WA Beer & Wine, poured into shaker pint glasses 5.24.2010.
Deep gold body, no visible carbonation, one finger quickly dissipation white head with minimal lacing. Big yeasty hit at bottom of bottle, either bottle conditioned or poorly filtered, pretty big flecks settled at bottom of glass. Nose features caramel malt sweetness and floral hops. Taste mirrors the nose with a farily bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel, decent drinkability, nothing exceptional. Not that impressed, in tasting paled in comparision with Snoqualmie Wildcat. I like that they brewed this in celebration of one of America's best city-located beer weeks, but otherwise, I'll pass next time.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.
Appearance: rich orange body with a slight haze and two thick fingers of pillowy ivory foam. Head retention is very good and there's plenty of foamy lace left on the glass. Looks pretty damn good.
Smell: big, bad funk. Super funky hops dominate the aroma here; hints of citrus, floral and spicy hops fill in the background. Unsubtle but there's a little complexity there.
Taste: nice rich malt bill underpinning the hop payload. Malt has a little biscuityness to it which adds a bit to the dry quality of the beer. Hop flavors are mostly funky with, again, a touch of citrus; some of the subtler flavors are lost here, though. Bitterness is pretty high; nobody would doubt this beer's double-IPA qualifications. Pretty tasty.
Mouthfeel: medium-thick body with a moderate level of carbonation; I'd prefer a little more. Body is sort of sticky and has some staying power, keeping the hop oil in constant contact with my palate.
Drinkability: quite drinkable indeed for an 8.3% beer. I like the bitter bite; it is deceptively refreshing.

I tried this on tap a few weeks ago and liked it, so when I saw this at the food coop I snagged it. Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a very clear and clean medium honey-amber color with just under an inch of slightly off-white head that had very good retention and lacing.
The aroma was nicely hoppy, as expected, with pine and floral upfront and a bit of citrus at the back. The citrus hop flavors were more noticeable on the tongue and the floral notes had a minor presence. There just a bit of malt showing through to supply a foundation and the beer had a semi-dry finish.
The body was fairly typical, a bit fuller than some examples I've tried. Drinkability was good, but absolutely average for the style. Overall, a slightly above average ImpIPA, but one worth trying if you see it.

Thanks to odiedog52 for the chance to try this. This is exceptional in every sense of the word. Hops are spot on. While it is a dense beer, it is also very drinkable. To me, this is what a DIPA is all about. I love the malt blend as it is a hop bomb but has loads of malt that balance it perfectly. Excellent job Hale's. Only problem now is I want more!! Could not find a flaw with this one. Pairing with Cheddar Cheese and Fig Spread w/ crackers. Godlike.

Pours a deep orange color with one and a half fingers of sticky white head.
Scent of pine, sap, resin, grapefruit, light spice, a hint of caramel, and a touch of alcohol. The hop characteristics are shown off well here with the caramel and alcohol taming them a bit.
Taste of pine, grapefruit, lots of resin, and some caramel, with a very bitter finish. I would have liked more bitterness initially, but this is a great beer the way it is.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a fair amount of carbonation and a sticky finish.

Poured from a bottle yesterday to kick of Seattle Beer week in the right way since I couldn't make it out. Hadn't read anything about this beer so didn't know what to expect compared to other Hale's IPA/DIPAs. Boy did it impress.
A - Pours a golden copperish orange with a very impressive sudsy head that really lingers. Very small bubbles and nice lacing to boot.
S - Floral and citrus hops right off the bat, backed by the sweet scents of caramel malts. Very hoppy nose. This is a real DIPA.
T - Awesome. The best IPA/DIPA from Hale's by far. I would classify this somewhere between DFH 90 Minute and PtE in taste. Sweeter than PtE, hoppier than 90 Minute.
It is very hoppy indeed with great floral and citrus notes. Some earthiness as well, and a good, strong, yet pleasant bitter finish. Not acrid. It is also sweeter than Supergoose or Pliny and is exceptionally balanced. I like Supergoose, but this blows it away.
Flavors expand and get more complex as it warms, adding a bit of pineapple. Going to have to get my fill of this before its gone - hopefully they make it a regular!
M - Rich, oily, chewy mouthfeel. Very nice all around, and exactly what you hope for in an IPA.
D - Well, it is a sipper, but I finished the 22oz'er no problems and will definitely by some more. The alcohol is there, but it is a very tasty and drinkable DIPA. Very nicely crafted brew.
