Bottle from the Brewery, grey-ish/blue wax. 70 IBUs into a tulip.
Black with maybe the slightest bit of ruby coming through around the edges. Generous tan head which leaves some good retention and moderate retention. Nose has some yummy spicy and fruity notes, roasted and lightly charred malts on par with the hops. Lots of graininess as well, malts are pretty clearly defined here. Hops seem to have taken a step back in terms of flavour but still provide some nice fruity notes, more tropical than anything. Light spicy Belgian yeast notes, and the roast/charred malts are not as prominent as in the nose - more toasty than anything, a bit of milk chocolate too. A touch of pine in the finish, but not a lot in terms of lingering flavour. Body is a bit thin for my liking in the style, but the carbonation is fairly low and aids drinkability. A bit more flavourful than the Chimay version, and certainly leaves a better impression on me. A bit past its prime, but still enjoyable.
