Beer 1 of my 2024 Beer Advent Calendar!
A- First off I always love the look of the black can and with the steely blue label its a great look! The beer itself is a slightly chill hazed light golden/yellowish color and appears to have a reasonably muted carbonation, with only a small number of colus rising to the top. The head is white, starts about a half finger in thickness, before swiftly fizzling out to a thin wispy layer over top the liquid....it is evenly spread out too. The lacing is sticky enough, with plenty of fine foam sticking to the inside of the glass. Overall an average looking ale, if not a little underwhelming.
S- Pretty mild aromas, with muted grains, some sweet grass, lighter malt varieties and honestly, not a whole lot else. There is perhaps a tinge of floral aroma and the finish is rather clean, with minimal hop bitterness, and mainly just more crisp biscuit like malt.
T- The flavors are definitely more ale like, and the hop bitterness shows itself on the palate. There are more biscuit flavors, which I am quite liking, along with some yeasty deeper malt sweetness, more of the same grassy-grainy dryness. The finish is clean, crispy and of some bread like richness, followed up by some hop cone bitterness.
M/O- The body of this one is medium-light and the carbonation I would say is fine, yet plentiful, providing a very drinkable crisp pale ale that I would have no issues having an evening session around. The alcohol is right for the style, and while I give this its props, I do find it a little underwhelming overall and liken it more to a well made lager than offering the floral and perhaps slight fruitiness that an English ale should provide....still decent enough!

A 500ml bottle with A BB of April 2014. Acquired a while back from Trembling Madness in York. The label describes it as a sparkling crisp ale - the yellow jersey of cycling beers. Hopped with Goldings and First Gold.
Poured into a straight pint glass. A hazy pale-gold hue with light sediment and medium carbonation. Yields a smallish head of white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of light malt with hints of grain, grass/hay, a twinge of spice, fruity ale yeast and mild stewed hops. Not bad, though less floral than I had anticipated.
Tastes of light malt with a crisp, dry finish. Notes of grass/hay, subtle grain, earthy yeast, a whisper of spice and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a restrained, leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with nicely-judged carbonation and good body for the style. Slightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of harsh stewed hops, earthy yeast and faint grain.
A pleasant pale ale, though I wish the hop character was a bit more pronounced. Looks nice, while the aroma and flavour are a blend of light malt, English hops and yeast. The aroma had a mild hop fruitiness to it, though the flavour is somewhat bland. Good body. Goes down all too easily, and would certainly be refreshing on a warm day. Worth sampling if you come across it.
