A 500ml bottle with a BB of July 2014. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Brewed for the 75th anniversary of Mallard, the steam train that holds the world speed record and usually resides in York's National Railway Museum.
Poured into a straight pint glass. A bright golden-amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Some lacing. Aroma of husky caramel malt with hints of floral hops, subtle grass/hay, fruity ale yeast and faint stewed leaves. S'alright.
Tastes of light caramel malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of grain, mild caramel, grass/hay, delicate floral hops, fruity ale yeast and stewed hops. Perhaps a twinge of cardboard in the background. Well-attenuated, followed by a crisp, leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and decent body. Slightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter stewed hops, mild caramel malt and ale yeast.
Quite a nice brew - it quenches a thirst anyway. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour have a blend of light malt, subtle aroma hops and ale yeast. Decent bitterness balances the malt. Body is OK. I believe this was an anniversary one-off, but worth trying if you come across it.
