Got this in Munich @ Löwenbräu, and brought it back for my enjoyment, and your reviewing pleasure.
A: 500mL bottle pours out beautifully into my Weizen glass, with a huge, frothy, off-white head (a very light tan, perhaps). Tons of lacing on the sides, and even after it fizzles down, the head's at least a finger's width. The beer's a very fine cloudy brown color, with a hazy dark yellow around the bottom and the edges of the glass. Just something you'd expect from a Dunkel.
S: Banana-bread! I swear to God, I had some last week and this is what it smelled like. Very sweet and malty, but with overtones of bananas and bread. Perhaps a bit of yeast to it as well, as might be expected, and certainly some hints of clove, but the scent leans heavily in the direction of banana, which I appreciate.
T: Extremely pleasant, albeit a bit understated. Bananas, clove, and a certain sweet maltiness dominate, with some yeast and almost no hop bitterness, but it isn't as strong as I'd expected given the smell. Nothing unpleasant at all, don't get me wrong. Everything is absolutely fantastic, I'd just like a bit more of it. Overall though, this is a very, very tasty beer, and a fine example of a dunkel.
M: Very smooth on the whole with the frothy head making for an enjoyable, creamy mouthfeel. Medium-to-light body. No hop bitterness biting the back of your tongue, and a pretty damn good balance with the carbonation.
D: For what is fast becoming my favorite style of beer, Löwenbräu's Dunkel is a great example and something you could knock back a liter or two of, no problem. If you're really hardcore on Dunkel's like me, you'll find that, perhaps, this beer could benefit from a bit more of a pronounced flavor, but the flavor is fantastic nonetheless.
Prost!
