This APA was on tap at the Keweenaw Brewing Company taproom on 3/28/11. A $2.50 pint was served in a tumbler.

A finger-tall head topped the glass. Head retention was low. Spots of lacing touched the glass. The brew was a surprisingly dark copper tint, and very hazy to boot.

True to the beer's namesake, its aroma is dominated by simcoe hops. It is sticky and piney on the nose. There is a nice citrus aroma akin to tangerines.

The flavor profile follows suit. Piney hops taste fresh and delicious. There is also a substantial malt bill with a big honey-like sweetness. More hops ensue with orange-like citrus. The beer finishes cleanly. As far as the balance is concerned this beer leans toward the malty side, but the hop presence is nothing to balk at. Though mellow enough to be accessible, it is indeed hoppy. Regardless, both malt and hops are pretty jacked up for a standard pale ale offering.

This is a surprisingly full-bodied APA. Carbonation seems a little low, accounting for some of the extra weight. It's nice in the mouth and goes down smoothly.

Overall this was a really nice brew. It smells fresh and hoppy. It tastes full and sweet with substantial simcoe hop additions. It's full in the mouth and still refreshing. There was no ABV listed for this beer but I can't imagine it's incredibly high. In the past I have been underwhealmed by Keweenaw's canned offerings which makes this delicious pale ale a pleasant surprise. If this beer were canned it would surely have a permanent home in the can compartment of my mini fridge. Well done.

The Two-Schlitz ScaleĀ™: (see my profile for an explanation)
I give two Schlitz for this pale ale. It's a great take on a standard style.
