I bought a 22 oz bomber of this when it first came out but have had it in my cellar for a little over a year mostly because I haven't been that impressed with other Great Dane bottles so I wasn't in any rush to drink this.
It pours a dark black with a brownish head. It almost looks more like a stout. The smell is of faint fruit. The taste reminded me a lot of a cherry stout. It was tart upfront with some sweetness on the backend. There was also a dark malt profile in the background.
Although there are many barleywines that are better than this one, I liked it enough that I may try to grab another bottle to stash away. I think this beer was a little overpriced when it came out which led to much of it sitting on shelves in Madison for quite awhile.

22oz.
A: Pours black with a healthy dark tan head. Looks like a stout.
S: Dried cherries definitely coming through in the aroma, along with mild roasted grain, cocoa, toffee, a slight mint-like note.
T: Taste brings a rush of sweet, almost syrup-like cherry flavor, moderate roast, a hint of hop bitterness, maybe some mild caramel behind the huge sugary cherry.
M: Thick-bodied with light carbonation, chewy.
O: This is an interesting idea but the cherry flavor is just too over the top and cloying to enjoy more than a few ounces of.
