served on-tap @ Great Dane Pub, downtown Madison, WI

Pours a cola-esque shade of brown. .5 fingers of khaki head don't wait very long to dissipate. The beer doesn't look bad, but it should be more black, I'd think. Schwarz and all.

A mild roasty component meets some way out of place dark fruits. I don't understand why the yeast is throwing off these aromas. Have the brewers at Great Dane not had a schawrzbier before? This smells like a shitty porter. But it's ostensibly a lager. So, um, yeah.

God fuck. This is one of the very worst beers I've ever had. The initial attack is all ashy bitterness, like a cup of Maxwell House that was found at the site of that burned down house in L.A. Noir. It transitions on the midpalate to a flavor reminiscent of a rum & cherry Coke, only rotten. The finish is all cherry cordial that was produced at the same facility as Duralast batteries. There isn't a single redeeming feature to this beer's flavor.

The mouthfeel is nearly as atrocious. It isn't just undercarbonated, it is nearly flat. The difference in mouthfeel between this beer and the same brewery's cask-conditioned pale ale that I had was essentially nil. Thin, watery, insubstantial. Overall, this is a dreadful beer. How this could be served commercially is beyond me. Doesn't this brewpub have a Goddamned tasting panel?

Pours a dark black color and a brown along the edges of the glass. 1/5 inch head of a pale tan color. Poor retention and decent lacing. Smells of roasted malt, yeast cleanliness, and slight alcohol. Fits the style of a Schwarzbier. Mouth feel is smooth and slightly thick with a low carbonation level. Tastes of strong roasted malt up front, slight alcohol next, very slight yeast cleanliness comes through next, and some toffee in the finish. Overall, a strong , but very smooth brew that I would recommend.
