I got this growler for 4 bucks on monday. What a steal!! I was told by my server that this was the "Christmas Ale " that was left over so thye put it in a bourbon barrel for three months and...oila!!

The first thing you get is the bourbon aroma. It is strong but not overpowering. Not much foam but nice lacing as you drink it down. The taste is amazing. The bourbon is noticeable and upfront but gives way to sweet smooth malt flavors that balance it well. Then it ends with woodsy/earthy taste with a hint of alcohol. This is a bold beer that is pulled off wonderfully. We are lucky to have bold brewers in Louisville.

Cumberland Brews never ceases to amaze. My return to Louisville this year had, well, the marginal favorites of yesteryear. They were as good as Sierra Nevada, but a bigger facility and a brewer change makes the Pale and the Porter not the nectar I remember. Last year it was their dort, and it was excellent. This year, wow.

This was a bourbon barrel aged strong ale. No ABV listed and I didn't think to ask. It starts looking like a brown ale with little to no head but an everlasting lace. The scent is what took me. Never before had I had a bourbon barrel aged beer smell like bourbon. There was always the remainder of bourbon, but never the strong scent of bourbon overwhelming all. There was a touch of raisin and sweet malt, but the bourbon wins.

Mouthfeel was sticky, kind of like a scotch ale with a maple sugar aftertaste.

Taste, well, I'm no specialist of strong ales, but if they are anything like this, it's a good thing. Bourbon was not overpowering, but was strong enough to brace you. Being Kentucky, bourbon barrels are common, and I'm guessing the condition of this one was still wet. Then the taste of the wood was there, but faint. It went past bourbon, tasting a little on the sweet side and big maple flavor with butterscotch and the alcohol burn at the end.

Yes. I will have another at the end of the night. The small batch seasonals can keep flowing from the Cumberland. I'm still talking about this one and will for a long time.
