A dark, full-flavored ale with a rich, roasted slightly sweet malt flavor and a mild hop finish. Balanced chocolate malt roastiness with crystal malt sweetness. “Don’t be afraid of the dark”.

Moderate amount of tan head. Opaque, dark brown and nothing else look. Medium heavy level of dark roasted grains, for the aroma. Kind of thin bodied, and even in the taste, to a lesser degree. Somewhat smooth, dark roasted grain and malt flavors, with a tiny, dark roasted grain bite, in the finish.

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at the brewery.
Appearance: dark brown hue with red highlights. Head is a thin layer of ivory foam that dissipates quickly.
Smell: sweet caramel aroma. Not much roast or toast; mostly sweetness.
Taste: very sweet with plenty of caramel and a dash of roast. Just a bit too sweet.
Mouthfeel: medium rich body with a big carbonation and a good creaminess.
Overall: a bit too sweet to be a great porter, but other than that it's OK.

Poured a dark black that had some light sift through. For a porter it did look a little on thin side, no head. Smell was of coffee and malty sweetness. Taste was a mixture of chocolate and coffee with a hint of malts. The texture was smooth but thin. The flavor is good and it is not very heavy. A little of the sweet side but it does not pack a very heavy punch. I like this as a session beer and recommend trying it.

I sampled several Atomic beers with my bear buddy imacoug. Like most Atomic brews this one had a light ABV of somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5% (according to the wait staff that range is considered by the brewer to produce the best balance and most flavor in beer).
A: It poured a very dark color with hints of ruby red when back lit. The head was moderate and a light caramel color (it reminded me of RC Cola) that receded leaving a ring around the collar that produced a nice consistent lacing.
S: It had an initial aroma of sweet lightly toasted malts. I had expected a burnt robust flavor of malts followed by a coffee back but the back never showed up making the brew fairly one dimensional.
T: The flavor followed the aroma, generating a sweet toasted malt flavor that characterized the brew from start to finish. There was a slight bit and sour aftertaste but it was unremarkable. The fact is the beer was flat and one dimensional. It was not unpleasant but it was also nothing to shout about.
M: Another thin, watery brew that seems to characterize this brewpub. There was a moderately sweet front and a tinge of sour backside.
D: It was like drinking a toasted malt flavored soda that had little zip. Bland and unremarkable but worth a try.

Dont be afraid of the dark, reads the teaser on the menu for Atomics darkest regular ale. Plutonium is a sweet porter, not the robustnroasty kind. Having accepted this premise I eased into the pint and found it simple and agreeable if somewhat underwhelming. The maltiness had moments of kindness and almost intrigue, but the deep-glowing red body was a bit flat and the beer as a whole lacked life.
But after some reconsideration (I enjoy the virtue of drinking slowly enough to both consider and reconsider a single pint) Ive decided I genuinely enjoy Plutonium. Ill generously assign a British designation to account for the flat body. But I found a lot to like in the flavor, which tastes like dark bread soaked in molasses and it meets the test of would I have another? Yes, I suppose I would.
