Sweet Gale is the English name for Porse. Sweet Gale is also the first beer in our signature series of historic beers.

In the last century, porse was often used in beer brewing instead of the expensive imported hops. That is why porse was also called poor man's hops. Sweet Gale is a golden lager with a round and aromatic taste of porse. It is a beer that is just as suitable for lunch as for not too heavy dinner dishes.

Copenhagen 3/3 2019. 50 cl bottle from Meny, Bryggervangen, Kbh Ø. Apparantly a part of Thisted's Signature Series. A fairly old fashioned brand design - this time in red - with a Raven, some corn Ears and a Hop cone. Signature Series is beers with a history - and this one is using Gale as a substitute for Hops as Gale apparently was regarded as the Poor Man's Hops in medieval times.

Pours quite unclear pale yellow with a medium-sized white head. Settles as thin layer of foam just managing to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing.

Aroma is sweet, flowery and quite herbal. Light caramel sweetness meets a strong herbal presence of Myrica Gale. A bit one-sided to be honest. Hints of licorice.

Medium strong carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, lightly prickly texture.

Flavor is rather sweet followed by a moderate, herbal bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and spicy. Lingers for a while.

A bit too herbal and one-sided for my taste. Myrica Gale might be the Poor Man's Hops. But then again I might pay some extra dough to get the real hops. And this beer was not exactly cheap anyway.
