At the brewpub in Troy. This one's 10.2 percent ABV for 2012.
Served in a snifter. Black, maybe some lighter hues in the light. Dark brown head. Some lacking as I drink.
Aromas of roasted malt, mostly. Not so much coffee or chocolate as burnt barley. Some light alcohol notes.
Strong roasted malt flavors, smooth, definite espresso notes. Finish is chocolate-like and a bit hot with the ABV. Tasty.
Mouthfeel is medium-heavy, but this one's not as milky or creamy as others.
Overall, this is a good imperial stout, and I'm glad to have it made just a short walk away. I wish they would age this one in the same barrels as their whiskey-barrel porter.

A-Deep black, not much head as it was filled to the brim.
S-Roasted malt, chocolate and some coffee.
T-Burnt notes, roasted malt and chocolate. Slight coffee but not much.
M-Thick, little carbonation, creamy.
O-A nice RIS from a local brewery. Nothing world class but it was nice to see the brewery take on a more bold brew.

A - Pours a very dark black color with a nice finger of dark brown head. The head had nice retention and left behind some nice lacing.
S - The strongest scent is of the roasted malt, and there is a nice amount of it. There is also some nice chocolate and carmel/toffee elements to go along with it. Could be a bit more powerful overall.
T - Starts of with a really deep chocolate malt taste that really builds nicely. Then a bit of toffee sweetness and a bit of dark fruit flavor comes through. Just a hint of bitterness at the finish that lingers, from a mixture of chocolate and hops.
M - Full bodied with a very low amount of carbonation. Super creamy and pretty smooth,
D - Fairly drinkable. It is a fairly heavy beer, but it is still very enjoyable and goes down very smooth. The flavors are really nice and pretty well balanced, especially the finish.

Off tap at the brewery this beer was an opaque black color with a mahogany meniscus. It looked like a frothy, chocolate mocha on top! The one finger of head retained well and left some streaks of lacing. The aroma was rich and sweet, chocolate malt, caramel malt and roasted malt all came through along with some coffee. The flavors were rich and hearty, chocolate, coffee, smoked meat, wood, caramel malt, and enough bitterness on the finish to balance it. The alcohol punch was there, but like a true gloved heavyweight it showed finesse. The mouthfeel was creamy, the body full and the carbonation low.
