It started out with a cap saying "it aint heaven on Route Seven". ugh, sure....
Before i tried this i checked their website to see what it was that I'd be drinking and the site said it was an ipa. When i pour it i was alittle surprised since it didnt look like and ipa...it looked more like a brown ale, and it didnt taste very much like and ipa..it tasted more like a mai bock. Not to say this wasnt good...I loved it. I just never had a ipa like this one. Wish they sold 12 packs of it.

More of a specialty beer than a straight-up IPA. There's oak everywhere. You can smell it, taste it, and burp it up later. But it's not overwhelming. It's also one of the maltiest IPAs I've had. Since nothing on the bottle tells you what's in the bottle, I thought it was a scottish ale. But that might have been the oak that reminded me of a lowland scotch that reminded me of Scotland... It's an interesting beer (and good one at that) but I'm not that upset that it's only brewed once a year.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle. Freshness date notched on the back label. My cap read "Tonight can be thrilling if you're willing." Oh yeah!
Appearance: Dark red-amber in colour, clear and with a patchy off-white cream head that settles to a sticking patchy lace.
Smell: Wonderful bouquet of woody/oak, earth, pugent and perfumey raw hops. Some herbal-mint-floral action going on too, with a stab of citrus. Hot damn! What an aroma!
Taste: Real smooth and creamy on the mouth. Body is thick, heavy, chewy and even. A very malty beer with a mellow, rounding sweetness and faint touch of roasted and carob. Distinct woody oak flavours. Juicy fruit flavours follow, mild esters. Hops are huge in flavour with lots of fresh, raw flavours like: leaf, citrus, rind and some astringency. Overall, near puckering and it turns the beer rather dry. Fruity and hop flavours linger into the finish, with a dry palate and more oak residuals.
Notes: Magic Hat says: "Batch 621 is only available in our variety 12 pack through the holiday season. Our ode to Ballantine IPA.... one of the most famous IPA's from the 50's ... complete with a hint of oak."
Todd says: "I love this beer. They should make it year round."
