Dark amber beer with sweet caramel sugar flavors and rich chocolate taste, rounded out by a sharp hop presence. Slightly untraditional, a portion of this beer was aged in whiskey barrels for over 4 years, resulting in subtle whisky and vanilla notes.

Off the tap at the brewery this Old Ale made with the remaining Chaotic Chemistry (a barleywine) from the winter of '08 was a dark copper color. The khaki-colored head became a tight collar and retained itself well as well as leaving thin bands of lacing that faded to spots. The aroma was of roasted malt, fruity alcohol esters and some heat from the barleywine father with a light smokiness. The flavors were quite enjoyable, starting on a note of caramel malt and chocolate malt. In the middle I got roasted malt with some wood, fruity esters and hints of vanilla and hazelnuts. The finish was long and malty. The carbonation was medium, the mouthfeel average and the body medium. Well balanced and pleasantly sweet enough to offset the 8% ALC. An improvement on the Chaotic Chemistry and a beer I happily took a growler of home.
