My wife and I were invited to tour this brewery by our German host family who knew that we were beer lovers. This review is not about the gasthof and biergarten that they have here, but is a review of the tour and especially the tasting room after the tour was complete.
Since our host family made the arrangements for this visit I do not know if there is a charge for the tour, but I would guess that there is. The tour guide spoke no English (some guides do speak English) so our hosts tried to translate a summary for us. I am a homebrewer and my wife follows my efforts closely, so we knew pretty much what was being described during the tour. However, it was the tasting after the tour that we were looking forward to, and it didn't disappoint.
We sampled 7 beers that were poured from bottles, and every one of them was a great example for its style. Five of the 7 beers were given a score of 4.0 or higher (out of 5.0). The standout beer was the Rose Bock, but also notable were the Odenwalder Land Bier, the Kellerbier, the Mai Bock, and the Meister Pils. Schmuckers was the “2015 Brewery of the Year” in Germany, and the award is well deserved. If you find yourself in The Oldenwald, take the time to visit this brewery and enjoy their beers.
