A pint glass at Amnesia's cozy pub...this is the new winter seasonal which debuted recently at Amnesia's 1st Winter Festival. Recent record snowfall leveled the canopy and heating system under which the fest took place, so having a pint at the brewery gives some token support to the rebuilding efforts.
The name 'Belznickel' derives from the anti-Santa folklore figure who delivered chunks of coal to bad girls and boys.
A: Chestnut orange-brown, a warm haze. Scant head, barely covering with more than a wisp of swirling film. Droopy lines of lace, broken and speckled.
S: Lightly smoky malt, a scattering of spices, some whiffs of fruit (sweet citrus and berries).
T: Husky, toasted grain - a sweetened dark breadcrust. Spiced fruit, some roasted nuts, dashes of nutmeg. Dry spiciness, a little tartness of apples and tangy berries. Faint smoke. Pretty tasty and well balanced.
M: Smooth, with just a mildly spiced tingle. Body is medium, bordering on heavy, finishing with a tangy sweetness. Slight grainy coating and stickiness on the lips; also faint alcohol warmth.
D: Tasty winter warmer; good balance and flavorful, without overt sweetness or bitterness. Would have this again, definitely.
