It's rare to encounter an all-wheat beer, let alone an all-wheat ale brewed along IPA lines. But according to 4th Street's menu, this "Wheat IPA" is brewed with four different wheat malts and no barley at all. It is clear dark bronze - very pretty - but with a surprising lack of suds for an ale brewed entirely with wheat. It possesses a strong alt-like nuttiness with notes of wood chips and wet tobacco. Hops are a spiced herb garden and don't project the types of floral/citrus/pine notes more common among typical NWIPAs.

A curious beer with a long dry finish enhanced by hop spice and a touch of graphite. The IPA label is perhaps misplaced and I wouldn't want to drink this one every night. But it is a welcome diversion from the routine and certainly worth a try.
