This doppelbock was the strongest beer on 4th Street's menu and an unlikely choice for me during a heat wave in July. But the question of whether 4th St. could brew a strong lager loomed large. In this case, the answer is that they can brew a strong lager and serve it in July. But not one of particular note.

The beer is given no proper name, let alone one with the traditional "-ator" suffix. It is deep brown with ruby highlights and no suds, and carries a slight bitter chocolate aroma and taste. Alcohol thins the body a bit and intrudes somewhat in the taste. There were also a few medicinal off-notes at first, though these receded momentarily.

At 30 IBU, this doppelbock is over-bittered. It is also sullen and lacks polish. But a few notes of chocolate arrive late to enhance the finish.
