The appearance was a semi-dark amber/red to brown color with just a slim cap of a little white foamy head. Quickly slid off to barely leave any lace.
The aroma had a nice smooth dark bready sweet maltiness up front playing with a light grassy smooth sweet hoppiness and a little bit of a clean earthy crisp malt on the back end with a little bit of toast.
The flavor was moderately sweet with a fairly quaint earthy/grassy hop kick riding along the malts, light toast, some dark bread. Not much of any aftertaste, somewhat dark bready.
The mouthfeel was almost medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation sat fine. ABV felt appropriate. Dark bready sort of finish.
Overall, definitely a cleaned up version of a semi-catch all style. Thank God there wasn't any of that "skunkiness" that I used to find in one of those crappy Heineken dark lagers. This beer would blow that out of the water for the style if they ever met in a contest.
