Wet Hot American IIPA

From the 16 oz. can dated 07/13/21. Sampled Aug 12, 2021.

The pour is a hazy golden color with a lasting white head.

There is a lot of aroma such as orange, tangerine, grapefruit, with a cereal grain malt base. No notable booze.

The mouthfeel is medium and reasonably smooth.

The taste is sweet then hoppy with all the aforementioned tropical characters seem to jump forward at the finish. Lingering finish.

The can pour is cloudy orange with a 1 cm cap of fine, white foam and a faint aroma of tangerine and a hint of lime.
The flavor is tangy with citrus most prominent. There is a malt aspect but no spruce or pine.
This is good, but lacks dimension.

 

From the bottom of the can, the first two numbers are hard to read but it appears to say: "1 8 CANNED ON 07/14/21 09:47"

Appearance: The body is opaque and beige-orange color like a manilla envelope. It has a large-sized head with a cream color and a frothy appearance. It has good head retention and leaves some nice wisps of lacing as it slowly recedes.

Aroma: It has an aroma of orange and caramel mixed together with a bit of an English hop variety scent. It smells nice.

Taste: Up front there is a soft flavor of orange and dusty caramel. It tastes a bit like an old hard candy. The flavor stays pretty flat throughout its transition across the palate.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth and pillowy soft. Extremely gentle on the palate and very easy to drink. No bitterness at all. Perfect carbonation level.

Overall: The can states that this is a "Double India Pale Ale" and that it has "8.1% Alc/Vol." It is definitely a Double New England Style IPA and it does a great job of hiding the alcohol. The highlight of the beer is the mouthfeel which has a very nice texture and delivery to the palate. The aromas and flavors are pretty nice but a bit muted. I would buy this again but I would try to get it on tap or pick up a newer can if I could. I would recommend it if you like orange candy and want a more mellow drinking beer.

 

 

Out of the pint can and into a clear glass Imperial pint mug this went. A dirty blond colored liquid topped with a stark white head that seems to endure. There's a pretty good wet and piney hop aroma. The taste is wet and dank, but certainly not piney. The hops are biting enough, but the sweet wetness becomes cloying, impacting the finish. Unfortunately, the alcohol bites almost as much as the hops. The malt body is good enough, but it adds almost nothing to the taste except sweetness. So the mouthfeel is helped, but the taste sure could use some malt earthiness. Actually, the notes that accompany this listing are accurate. It is hazy, juicy and fruity with references to orange and lemon. Those that prefer their Double American IPAs to taste like fruit may rate this higher. To those looking for an earthy, piney or dry DIPA experience, this may disappoint. The glass lacing was nice.

 

 

Pours an opaque peach color with a creamy/foamy white head. Smell is a cornucopia of ,orange blossom flower,pineapple,orangeade,fresh cut grass. Taste is primarily ethanol with a sweet tangerine finish. This beer is off center ,not balanced. I get what they are trying to do but this is not great. Feels a prickly carbonation washed away with a tangerine finish. Not smooth, alcohol heat ,prickly carbonation finished by a syrupy tangerine finish. Initial bitterness lingers(not in a good way) I would drink this if given to me. Would not seek out or order in a pub or restaurant Overall disappointed. I first thought it said wet hops, not wet hot. I guess they were giving this beer a simple accurate review; "Wet and Hot" is pretty accurate. REVISION: I purchased this beer about 3 days after it was canned. In 3 1/2 weeks it has mellowed considerably. Will adjust score accordingly-

 

 

 

 

 

 

Pours a dull orange hue with a hazy clarity and a loose, 1/8th inch head that quickly dissipates into a band around the shoulders. Nose is subdued with hints of sweet citrus and pith. Taste consistent with nose with the addition of some crackery malt at the back. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a carbonation shy of assertive and a trace of oiliness to the texture. Overall, solid and well priced.
