Poured ontap in a shaker pint, the beer is jet black, with a foamy, clingy, tan head. Aromas of roasted grains, grapefruit, and pine pitch. Nicely balanced. Flavors are bitter and resinous hops forward, with a backbone blend of coffee and subtle chocolate. Citrus highlights of grapefruit and lemon zest keep it light. Smooth, light, and dry in mouth, with a roasty and bitter aftertaste. Dry, bitter roasted finish.

Finished off my lunch today with this one as it was the $3 special of the day. Came out a ruby-tinted dark black with a thin tan head on top. Big citrus scents wafting out, but some minor roasted tones noted as well. An odd scent reminded me of licorice. Not something I was expecting.
Good smooth body with a fair amount of heft to it. Surprised this is almost 7.00%. Drinks lighter than it is though. Bitter hops come out and meld well with the dark roasted malts. It is what it is, a dark IPA. A good bitter beer that will cure my hop fix.

A total stunner in the glass: the color is black black and more black, seriously giving any huge bad-ass stout a run for its money in terms of color. The head is an ultra-creamy thing, looking like the froth on top of a root beer float or something. It holds firm and lasts long too.
The aroma delivers super-clean, breezy, nearly perfume-like hops, while charred grain lays a foundation underneath.
Flavor is bold and burnt, although I would rather have more of the hops character pushing through. The charred grains are very much front-and-center here, the kind of thing a beer novice walking into Natty Greene's might taste and go "eewwww..." It's a pretty harsh kind of burnt, although I love this style, and it's not total carbon, either. Hops are leafy and astringent and they attempt to push through that indomitable wall of burnt-to-a-crisp grain. Not the most balanced I've had in this category, but something very likable about it nevertheless.
Texturally this has a great balance of soft and tingly, not quite reaching the creaminess of Black IPA king Iniquity (Southern Tier), but it does a good job and the flavors play off the feel nicely.
Totally happy with this one. I continue to feel that Natty's Greene's specialty, seasonal and/or high gravity beers end up being much more interesting and enjoyable than their year-round lineup. Won't be a chore to polish of the rest of the growler in the coming 24 hours or so...

Not quite the same beer as their other black IPa,this was more well rounded, and honestly a little better beer.Poured into a standard pint glass a deep cola color with with a frothy-like 1/2 finger head that held well.Aromas are earthy with dark bread notes, the hops seem to have a herbalness in the nose.A mix of earthy hops and lightly roasted malts on the palate, the earthiness is quite big and inviting.A pretty good beer, its a good tweaked version of the other beer of the same style.
