Appearance: Pours a hazy tea brown capped by a froth that piles two fingers high; strands and dots of lacing

Smell: Brown sugar, figs, dates, cardamom and spice cake tones

Taste: Brown sugar and dark fruit forward, with the cardamom and seeds of paradise flavors building through the middle, adding a spice cake flavor to the profile; the spices linger through the finish, with with the sweetness of the style and the dark fruit taking a back seat

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; slightly thick for the style

Overall: Between their sours and some of the other special releases such as this, one can see the capabilities of Natty's as a brewery; because their production beers are often so pedestrian, the brewery doesn't have the reputation it deserves

 

this beer pours a solid, clear amber with no head. the nose is slightly fruity from the malt and yeast. the taste is the same with intense fruitiness and sweetness that lingers. this taste is a very light and drinkable dubbel, but it's not exact to style. I would probably drink this beer again, it's something different in comparison to beer's that are strict to style.

Grabbed a 750mL bottle at Bottle Revolution in Raleigh, NC. Bottle number 557 of 600.

Served chilled in snifter.

A- 1.5 fingers of off-white head. not very persistent. color is a wonderful deep red haze.

S- belgian yeast, some raisin, touch of clove

T- sweet, fruity, more raisin goin on, again more typical belgian yeast flavor, esters a plenty, a touch bready but otherwise smooth malt presence. no bittering hops detectable, alcohol is detected but not boozy at all. clove flavor left on the lips

M- thick in the mouth, somewhat coating. Carbonation is good for the style, I would prefer more.

O- Solid representation of style, would have liked to have more flavor from either the added spices or maybe some darker malt. Though it is "full-bodied," I would expect an aged beer to take advantage of its heft and carry stronger flavors. That said, this beer remains true to its style by relying primarily on its yeast and sparign spices for flavor.

Nice to see Natty's coming out with a cellar series,although not a style I gravitate to very often I wanna support the local.Brewed with cardamom and seeds of paradise and with Trappist yeast.Poured into a chalice a deep auburn tinged brown with pillowey 1/2 finger tannish colored head atop,that cardamom comes thru in the nose along with deep fruity esters, and slightly yeasty phenols.Cakey and fruity on the palate with a great chewey feel,the cardamom is more subdued but does play a small role in the finish,not overly sweet though it is kept in check nicely.The brewers put alot of care and work into this beer and it shows,it's fantastic and they should be applauded.
