Appearance: Served from the wall-tap a clearish, dark brown body with a light, khaki-colored head.

Smell: This humble d-weisse smells of chocolate sprinkles atop dark, wheat-based bread with light, fleeting notes of fruit.

Taste: Malted wheat repleat with a dark breadiness, some slight nutty tones and sweet touches of caramel and cocoa powder. Touch of stewed figs. Light, tight bitterness lingering just underneath the malt character. Persists in its bready, chocolaty character until the easy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

Drinkability: During a little trip through North Carolina this past October, I stopped in at Heinzelmännchen to sample their wares. The beers were, well... yeah... but this dunkel was surprisingly tasty and, by far, the best of the lot.

Grabbed this one in a growler to go home after I had sampled it at the brewery. Poured from a very stylish looking growler, this was served cold right out of the fridge and shared with the family. Mine was poured into a tall pilsner glass. Consumed on 08/06/2008.

Very nice pour here with a rich hazelnut brown, with lots of reddish tints mixed in throughout. Light tan head of approximately three inches in height settled down quickly to a thin film across the top that stayed throughout the session. Nice carbonation could be seen bubbling up from it as well.

The aroma was rich, lots of roasted malts, hints of nuttiness and caramel swirled in throughout as well. Slight grassy and chewy like note in the first initial taste, but after that it was all roasted malts. Some light caramel and even a touch of a smoked flavor in the back end. Lots of caramel here again with a nice earthy flavor to it. Medium body and a smooth lively carbonation kept it from getting dull in anyway. The ABV was around 7% but you could not tell that from the flavor. Easily session able and very robust as it warmed up

Overall this was an excellent dunkel, one of the best I have had from a local brewer. They have really seemed to have found a nitch for their German brews as they do them very well and with a very well thought out plan. Cheers to them, solid beer all around and a solid operation.
