Served in the brewpub at our table, this brew was dark and cloudy with a good head that maintained some foam and lacing for a while. The smell was limited (disappointing): some hoppiness, but undistinguished.
The taste also lacked flair. It was a good, serviceable accompaniment to the good food. I'd guess it was about 48 IBUs and hopped with.... well it's hard to say. The mouthfeel was good as well, but there was little to make this ale stand out - other than that it was good draft beer in the middle of wine country. Being in a beer desert (albeit surrounded by oceans of wine), makes it hard to complain too much about this ale. I'd go back again and drink this stuff all night, just to avoid the wineries, the wine snobs, the $18 tastings, the $30+ bottles of fermented grape juice. Oh yeah, bless the Silverado Brew Pub and its "undistinguished" IPA.

On tap at Silverado on 7/16/09.
A - Unfiltered hazy orange/copper-colored body with one-finger creamy off-white head that settled into a thin veil but left elaborate lacing all over the glass.
S - Burnt caramel malt wth a hint of perfumy hops and faint spiciness. A moderate alcohol presence is also apparent.
T - Burnt, sugary caramel malt character with perfumy and spicy hops... and LOTS of boozy alcohol notes. Some grainy, bready malts emerge in the backend. Finishes with subtle citrusy hop notes and more alcohol warmth.
M - Medium bodied with a syrupy texture and moderate carbonation resulting in some tongue prickle. Very warm alcohol presence with a lingering bitterness on the palate.
D - A little too hot and malt-forward for an IPA, in my opinion. The alcohol presence concealed a truly defined hop character. Crank back the alcohol few notches and you've got a flavorful IPA.
