A true American style, this historical beer was nearly wiped out during prohibition and is now usually only found in
Louisville, Kentucky. Deep in amber color with a refreshing sweet malt and corn flavor.

I have little experience with common beer; they are uncommon in my beer repertoire. I had to use a few guidelines to help me through this review. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at a temperature of 40 degrees. The pour created a frothy, creamy, one-fingered, light tan head with above-average retention. The slow dissipation left chunks of lacing on the glass. The beer's color is trending toward the upper limit on the SRM scale, at 14, with a dark amber hue and reddish-orange undertones, and the clarity is clear. The appearance of the beer is above average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I detect roasted malts, light phenols, caramel, toasted bread crust, floral esters, pine resin, and a faint hint of mint notes. The malt profile smelled as if it had a longer boil, but not in a bad way.
Sipping the beer, I taste a floral bouquet, pine resin, earthiness, roasted malts, herbal notes, toasted bread crust, caramel, and a light malty sweetness.
The mouthfeel is astringent, finishing crisp and dry. The body is light and has medium carbonation.
Final Thought: For not knowing much about commons, I enjoyed sipping on this beer. The flavors are complex yet straightforward, with a lovely hop addition that complements the malt bill nicely—a refreshing beer to enjoy on a Sunday Afternoon.
