On-draught @ 16-Tun, Auckland, New Zealand.
Blackcurrant and fig leaf barleywine brewed with Maris Otter and English malt.
Warm honeyed alcohol sweetness. Gooey fruit/stonefruit (I'd just as easily guess prune or plum as fig if I tried this blind; it's all caramelized and gooey-d together).
Not tasting any berry or currant at all myself.
English malt sweetness, amber malt, caramelized sugars, liqueur. Glimmer of vanillin. Treacle.
Rich and warm. The kind of sweet nectary syrupy thick beer I might justify drinking out of a highball. You could use this beer as flybait given its sweetness and viscosity.
I'm having a 100ml pour, which I think is the maximum I could tolerate given its richness and weight on the palate.
I don't know that it delivers in terms of distinct fig leaf or blackcurrant, but it's a worthwhile barleywine in general, albeit too rich and viscous to be very drinkable.
Low B- / WORTHY
