A winter seasonal at Wynkoop.
This beer is following a trend I have been seeing from some brewers lately of adding strong hop flavor to a malty brown ale.
The color is a very nice dark amber. The head is medium.
The nose of the beer gives off chocolates and seems to hide the hops that are waiting for you with your first drink.
I was surprised at the bitterness from the hops at first because I was expecting more of a standard brown ale. After second sip however I find that the malts and hops in the beer create a very pleasing balance. There is a slight taste from the alcohol, but overall I find this to be a very tasty and drinkable brew however the high alcohol content means that you will not be putting a lot of these back.
I did have to invest in a growler to take home :)
Highly recommended.

(Served in an American pint glass)
A- This beer has a brown slightly dense body with a crystal clear body and a thin light tan head on top. The head last for a few sips and is supported by a light carbonation of tiny bubbles.
S- This beer has a light note of green hops with a musty hint of brown malt.
T- This beer has a brown malt flavor with a pine hop finish. There are notes of green earthy hops that come through when it warms a bit.
M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a slight alcohol heat that is noticeable when warm.
D- This beer is has some balance but it would be nice to have more flavor in both the malt and the hops.

A nice dark color, yet seems a bit thin at first. Served chilled, which I thought was too cold. Nice aroma of chocolate and caramel with some pepper (black). Taste was predominately roasted malt and chocolate but had yeast (biscuit). A bit slick and sticky, good drinking.

This beer was labelled "Captain Hickenlooper's Flying Artillery Ale". On the menu, it was described as a Strong American Brown Ale.
Dark brown, but clear with a tan head and great lace. This ale had an excellent aroma of crystal and chocolate malts. The high alcohol content is perceptible.
While hoppier than most brown ales, the alcohol comes through. Very full bodied, almost oily. This reminds me of a brandy or cognac with a nice aftertase blend of malt and hop.
This may be a little strong for continual drinking. Still, this is a very good brew worthy of another glass.
