Brewed with our friends at Phantom Canyon Brewing Co, this big brown ale is aged on French Oak to give it a rich and smooth flavor with notes of vanilla and toffee. The wood age imparts a dryness to the beer that cuts the rich body making this beer a tricky powerful punch. Originally aged with French oak, we switched it up and used a South American wood called amburana. This bark gives the beer gingerbread and cinnamon notes and is a unique twist on a Wynkoop classic. Pours a clear, dark brown color, appears opaque in the glass; initially decent head that soon fades to a thin, wispy ring inside the the glass. Excellent scent of cinnamon and dark roasted malt grains; graham cracker. Rich, dark malt flavor with a somewhat sharp bitterness; light dark chocolate with a touch of cinnamon and anise. Heavy body; smooth and silky.
A decent imperial brown ale with an amburana component. The amburana in this beer adds a somewhat odd sharp bitterness to things that just seems a little off, but that may also just be my palate this evening. I'd certainly try it again. It smooths out as it warms up.
