i wanted to love this, ill always have a soft spot for wynkoop as my now wife and i used to go there every week in the early days of our relationship, so much fun back then, anyway, it was cool to see something new from them, it had been years, and with a name like this, i expected mastery, but its mediocre at best, certainly not a standout in the booming new zealand pils space, which maybe should be its own category now here on BA. the listed hops make it sound even more sexy, pacific sunrise which i dont know if i know too much about, nelson, and motueka, sweet! but the beer is messy, not well lagered or crisp to me, not bright and clear, and so it sags even with a fine hop profile, but it doesnt even present as super fresh or anything, technically average at best, a shame, in part because of the buildup. nose and taste of cereal malt, both sweeter and fuller than would make sense in this, and its poorly refined on top of that. the yeast is tired to me in here, and while the hops do cool things, most appreciably the nelson, the base beer isnt quite up for what they seem to be wanting to do in here. white grape, ripe pear, and some generic hop fruitiness are in play, but the beer is sort of oxidized and weird and its just not what anyone who really gets it thinks of when they think new zealand pils, and its a bummer, a brutal sort of reintroduction to these guys, not at all what i was hoping for. maybe i am making it out to be worse than it is, but its not crisp and light, the hops are kind of far back, and the beer itself is just middling. wanted a lot more from this, offensive name with the poor execution...
